MONKEY WEEK

1.- JORNADAS PROFESIONALES MONKEY KEYS

SO WHAT’S THIS MONKEY WEEK ALL ABOUT ANYWAY?

MW is not simply another showcase festival, it is a meeting point for music industry professionals, artists, media, and the audience of the European independent music scene.  It takes place in El Puerto de Santa María, a beautiful seaside town in the South of Andalusia with a strong tourist appeal.

MW plans to provide the essential time and space needed to support workshops, conferences and round table discussions, with the objective of pooling knowledge, fermenting fresh ideas, fostering new projects and mapping routes for the development of the independent music industry.

MW recognises the importance of the cultural industry as a driving economic force and aims at engaging artists and professionals alike in this encounter.

MW bases its programme around four groups of activities where business, commercial exchange, creativity and leisure merge in an environment expressly designed for it.

These 4 axes of MW programme are:

  • Showcases Circuit
  • Monkey Keys (Pannels, workshops, networking activities)
  • Monkey Market (Trade Show)
  • Night shows

SHOWCASES

The whole city becomes a stage.

MW showcase circuit is the authentic core of Monkey Week activities and it has become one the biggest attractions for music industry professionals and the public.

The showcase circuit is one of the priorities for the MW organization, and all of these showcases give us an accurate analysis of the independent music scene.

MW presented 87 shows in 4 days in the 2010 edition and received bands from Spain, France, Italy and Portugal, and in the 2009 edition also received bands from Norway and Denmark.

MW showcase circuit becomes the perfect environment to present the new values of the music industry to professionals and the audience.

The second edition of MW Showcase circuit was sponsored by brands like Carhartt, Red Bull and Gibson, different media operatives such as RNE3, Mondosonoro, Ruta 66 and public institutions, including the Ministry of Culture, IAAL, IAJ, and music professional associations like UFI or AIE.

MONKEY KEYS (Panels, workshops, networking activities)

“For the first time in my professional career i had the sensation that a common ground could be found between journalists, critics, editors, record companies, musicians, promotors… Monkey Week has an excellent future ahead as a place where professionals can meet and debate”.

(Joan S. Luna, Mondo Sonoro)

In 2009 Monkey Week the professional programme revealed itself as a powerful  tool for exchange of knowledge. In 2010 Monkey Keys have become essential.

Monkey Keys consists of a series of professionally-oriented activities developed in different rooms in the Pedro Muñoz Seca Theatre, at the heart of MW activities.  Artists, music professionals, industry key players, press and the audience meet here in a unique forum where knowledge exchange, discussion and understanding become the driving force of the independent music culture and industry.

Monkey Keys second edition relied on the presence of 54 keynote speakers coming from Spain, the U.S, France and England. It held debates about the latest issues that affect the music industry and included workshops by renowned professionals and artists like Rhys Chatham or John Agnello.

Monkey Keys also creates the opportunity to present new products and new activities developed by professional associations and committees related to the music industry.

MK has become an essential meeting point for the independent music industry agents and the perfect environment to keep in touch. MK was sponsored in 2010 by different brands and  associations like Live Nation, Fundación Autor, UFI Board, or Pago Juices among others.

MONKEY MARKET – TRADE SHOW

Monkey Market also takes place inside of Pedro Muñoz Seca Theatre, and in the 2010 edition accomodated 54 companies exhibiting in 45 stands.

In its second edition, Monkey Market raised the presence of Spanish exhibitors  and also had five companies coming from different countries in Europe. It has revealed itself as the perfect place to promote communication between companies, encourage business exchange and foster synergies among different agents in the music industry.

Record labels, managers, events producers, media, communication agencies, musicians… all of them have a place to promote their activities in Monkey Market to build the foundations of a solid industry.

Monkey Week organization is already working on getting a bigger venue to host Monkey Market and increase the number of companies exhibiting, and we are also trying to include a new stage inside the trade fair to develop different artistic activities and presentations that help to boost the activity inside of it.

NIGHT SHOWS

MW night shows take place in an amazing venue, Monasterio de la Victoria, a 16th century monastery that was later converted into a jail at the turn of the 19th century and was later abandoned until the early 1980’s. It is has been restored and is currently used for cultural purposes.

As the music bewitches its audience in this most unique setting, nobody wants to leave. In its 2010 edition, the building’s beautiful cloisters housed the Heineken stage in 2010, welcoming artists of the calibre of Andrew Bird, Kid Koala, Herbaliser, the Strange Boys, Triangulo de Amor Bizarro and the Buzzcocks.

The exterior gardens of the Monastery obtained a new stage in the MW second edition, namely The Red Bull Tour Bus, where the night showcases took place, while the 16th century chapel housed the VIP and professional area.

The Monastery is a short five minutes walk to the town centre, where activities and showcases take place throughout the day, and is a brief one minute walk from the train station. This is a perfect venue for Monkey Week nights, where artists, professionals and the audience can enjoy at the rythm of music.

The monastery is a distinctive venue that makes the night shows unique providing a historical environment of unequalled beauty where the public can truly enjoy the music.

One of MW’s key philosophies is rooted in the association of location to event. All of the activities taking place during this four day experience are part of a cultural circuit and convert the town into one giant and incredible set.
